A different way to pray-
“Try praying differently, and see what happens:
Instead of asking for “a way to sleep with her,” try asking for “a way to stop desiring to sleep with her.”
Instead of “a way to get rid of him,” try asking for ” a way to not crave his demise.”
Instead of “a way to not lose my child,” try asking for “a way to lose my fear of it.””
– Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
I found it particularly difficult to write this. One the other hand, I couldn’t wait to share this quote. Regardless of who you pray to, we find ourselves asking for the end resolution instead of the path or steps to help us achieve the resolution on our own.
“Help me land a new job”
“Help me acquire more money”
“please- please- please let me ace this final exam”
“I hope my team wins the sports game”
While reading this quote it dawned on me how “nakedly selfish” these little requests truly are. It’s much like a request to a divine being to intervene and magically make life’s challenges disappear.
What if we ask for fortitude and strength?
What if we seek clarity?
Imagine – How much more would our prayers be answered if we changed the way we pray?
